For years the Mac was the cockpit, rarely the engine. You wrote code on it, then shipped the real workload somewhere else. A Linux box. A cloud VM. A Pi cluster humming in the corner.

This flips that.

I moved to Mac mini nodes after the RAM price surge left the Raspberry Pi sitting at silly money. And in practice this does not dent Docker licensing much, the same way WSL never really did on Windows. The win is something else. Virtualisation built for Apple silicon, not bolted on after the fact.

Apple is noticing where the market is going. They wrote this in Swift, tuned it for their chips, and put it in the open under Apache-2.0. That is a company treating the Mac as a serious compute node, not a pretty terminal.

And the timing is perfect if you consider the next Mac Minis are likely not going to be your dedicated workstation but a secondary node. On the other hand agentic apps like OpenClaw and Hermes need to run their work in a sandboxed environments this opens up more workflows.
